Me, My Life, My Passions

ME

D L Behan

A.K.A | Debbbie Behan

In 2007, fate stepped in when I was laid off because of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). However, I saw this as an opportunity to pursue my dream job. After devouring 75 vampire books in a single year, I decided to write a novel of my own. Not knowing where to start I thought back to all those long drives and the characters I met and acknowledged that my journey towards becoming an author began at a young age. Sleeping outside those hot summer nights with siblings and neighbours gave me an idea for the universe to be featured in the stories I write now.

Just like the way I live my life, adventure, and action are abounding with a touch of romance. I hope to stir your imagination, leave an everlasting imprint in your mind that anything is possible, all you need to do is BELIEVE.

My Life

The Beginning

SJB Indie Publisher | Late 2023

I spent the first 12 years of my life in Tallangatta, Victoria, a small town tucked between mountains. The scent of pine in the air and the sound of wildlife from the woods is something I will never forget. My weekends were spent on hikes and bush walks, wading through fresh streams and exploring nature with family and friends. We often camped out beneath the stars, talking and marvelling at the wonders of the night sky. Blankets and pillows were our only armour as we lay in awe, searching for constellations and shooting stars, letting our imaginations take us away.

My early teen years were filled with the breathtaking wilderness of Mt. Newman in Western Australia and the vibrant metropolis of Perth.

In 1993, I met a wonderful man who swept me off my feet and is now my husband. Our daughter, Jody now lives close to my childhood home with our two grandsons, Kai and Josh.

My position as a Deli Specialist at the time included travels throughout Victoria, Western Australia, Queensland, and New South Wales and opened my eyes to many people. It wasn’t until I wanted to become a full-time writer did I apply my life experiences to my stories. Thanks to these colourful trips and the various adventures I encountered, I could let my imagination soar high.

I spent the next nineteen years of my married life in Queensland, writing many of my stories. During this time my husband, Shaun, showed me there was more to life than working.

My Passions

Writing

Imagination mixed with Reality

My passion for the marvels of the universe, tales of mythology and the vastness of the unknown has inspired me to learn more about spheres, planets, stars, galaxies, and beyond. Even cloud formations have been studied in greater detail as I use my knowledge to bring my fantasy worlds, characters and stories to life.

Through my books, I want to introduce readers to the realm of my imagination, an exciting world full of adventure and action with a hint of romance. My goal is for readers to be immersed in this fictional world and leave with the belief that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

Travelling

Fuel for my imagination

2019 we purchased a caravan and travelled Australia for the next four years. We cherished our time on the road and loved the outdoors as we explored our wonderful country. It was an awesome experience we will treasure always, but in 2022 we finally decided on the state we wished to live and have settled in Perth WA.

Adventures

More to life than work

Together, we enjoyed activities such as four-wheel driving, fishing, camping, as well as many fun times with dancing friends learning ballroom and Latin dance. An exercise we got very good at and worked our way into the bronze category.

Dancing

Ballroom, Latin and Rock n Roll.

We spent many fun times with dancing friends learning Ballroom, Latin and Rock n Roll dance. Enjoyed the exercise and with time we got very good at most of the styles but above all had fun dancing together. Eventually we worked our way through bronze level into silver and even competed at the ASDAC in Canberra.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did you learn to write fantasy novels?

Read, read and read some more.

I was a reader of fantasy novels so knew it had to have a beginning, lots of action and an end the reader was not expecting.

How did you structure it to get that outcome?

I was not a plotter or planner. I just sat at the keyboard and allowed the characters to write their story they wished to tell. I did not know what the ending was to be until I wrote it and typed, ‘the end.’

Did you do a writers or editing course?

Surround yourself with the right people.

I joined many writers’ groups, had meetings at my home and after, started up my own group where we met at the library once a fortnight. I listened to every bit of feedback and practiced, practiced, practiced. I read once that you had to write a million words before you even start to get good at this craft and I did this in the first year. I use programs to help me edit now but over the years, working with so many professionals, I have since sharpened my craft, thanks to them.

Are you a descriptive writer?

Room for readers to imagine

Even after all this time I still cannot get to caught up with waffle as I love the fast pace of a good movie that has me on the edge of the seat. Because of this I get busy with a great story and give only the hint allowing the reader’s mind to dream within my stories too.

Do you have a title before you start a story?

What came first the title or the story.

I have an idea for a book before I start. Not an ending, just an idea. I then design a temporary cover page in powerpoint. I gave it a title that’s just there in my mind at the time. I save it as a jpeg then make it my screen saver. Every time I open my computer it is my inspiration to keep writing that story. Usually a title comes into my head before I’ve even finished the current book I am writing. Strange I know! Like I was writing the keepers of the light trilogy when ‘cloud riders’ came into my head. I had no idea what the story was about so once I began it I started researching clouds, which took me to the stars and planets. Then they led me to mythology. And that’s how the magical Cosmic Collection of stories came about. Mind you, almost every one of my titles change, but that’s another story.
